Executive Summary
Executive Summary – Desert Power® Ver. 2.0
Turning Waste into Green Methanol at Scale
Desert Power® is a large-scale green methanol project located in Duqm, Oman. It converts Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) into synthesis gas, and then into IMPCA- and ISCC-certified methanol using proven, high-temperature gasification and mature synthesis technologies.
At full scale, the plant will produce up to 970,000 tons of methanol annually, with 100% of the feedstock derived from waste. The project is aligned with UN SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and supported by a growing global demand for green fuels in the shipping and chemical sectors.
Project Highlights
- Location: Portside site in the Special Economic Zone of Duqm (SEZAD), Sultanate of Oman
- Capacity: 4,900 tons/day RDF & MSW → 2,600 tons/day methanol
- Technology: Oxygen-blown blast furnace (FastOx®), Water-Gas Shift reactor, and methanol synthesis loop
-
Output:
- 560,000 t/year bio-methanol
- 410,000 t/year recycled carbon fuel (RCF) methanol
- 1.7 million t/year CO₂ (available for sequestration or hydrogenation)
- By-product: Vitrified slag – inert, non-leaching, and landfill-free
Investment Structure
To bring the project to Final Investment Decision (FID), we are currently raising:
- €25 million for the FEED phase (Front-End Engineering Design, permitting, and bankable structuring)
- Follow-on investment of approx. €500 million for the EPC phase (construction and commissioning)
EIFO (Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund) has provided seed support. The project is developed and led by Agro Industries A/S, Denmark.
Why Invest?
- IRR on total capital: 15.4%
- IRR on equity: 38.8%
- NPV (5% discount): €1.13 billion
- No scale-up risk: Proven, modular technologies
- First-mover advantage: Industrial green methanol from waste
- Strong market demand: Shipping, chemical, and fuel sectors
