FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is Desert Power®?
A large-scale green methanol project in Oman, converting municipal and industrial waste into certified methanol for use in shipping, fuel blending, and chemical industries.
Oman?
The Desert Advantage:
Duqm, located on the southeastern coast of Oman, offers a uniquely strategic location and industrial ecosystem for green methanol production and export:
- 🏙️ Access to abundant waste streams from Oman’s rapidly growing urban regions and regional imports
- ☀️ High solar irradiance — ideal for powering auxiliary systems or future electrolysis
- 🛠️ Existing methanol infrastructure: Two major methanol producers are already established in the area, creating a mature support ecosystem of service providers and qualified human resources
- 🏗️ Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD): Offering tax advantages, streamlined permitting, and infrastructure tailored to industrial-scale projects
- ⚓ Deep-sea port facilities: Duqm is a fully developed deep-water port capable of accommodating Suezmax tankers, facilitating global methanol export
- 🌍 Prime location: Situated directly on one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, connecting Europe, Asia, and Africa
Together, these conditions make Duqm one of the most attractive global locations for scalable, cost-effective green methanol production and export logistics.
What is the technology used?
Desert Power® uses oxygen-blown high-temperature gasification (FastOx®) to convert RDF/MSW into synthesis gas. This syngas is then shifted and catalytically converted into methanol via a conventional loop. All technologies used are proven and modular.
How is the CO₂ handled?
The process generates a clean, concentrated CO₂ stream. This can be:
- Sequestered via geological storage (CCS)
- Used for hydrogenation into additional methanol
Who is behind the project?
The project is developed by Agro Industries A/S in Denmark and supported by EIFO (Export and Investment Fund of Denmark). FEED and EPC phases are open to industrial and financial investors.
What are the investment phases?
- €25 million for FEED (engineering, permits, structuring)
- ~€500 million for EPC (construction, commissioning)
